Sellers ask AI who should do their books. The answer is a shortlist of four.
Ask an assistant "best accountant for an Amazon FBA business" and it returns a handful of names — several of them platforms, at least one a firm that no longer exists in the form the model remembers.
What the answers look like in this niche
E-commerce accounting queries are unusually brand-concentrated. A few large bookkeeping platforms occupy most answers, aided by heavy content operations and marketplace listings. Specialist firms — the ones who actually understand settlement reconciliation, inventory accounting, multi-channel sales tax, and A2X or Link My Books workflows — appear far less often than their client results would suggest. Buyers reading that answer form a shortlist of two or three and contact them. The rest of the market never enters the conversation.
Why it happens
The model isn't ranking competence. It's repeating consensus assembled from third-party sources: "best ecommerce accountant" listicles, marketplace and review profiles, app-partner directories, community threads, and comparison pages published by vendors themselves. Around 85% of AI citations come from those sources rather than a firm's own site. Being excellent and being cited are different problems.
What we do about it
- Measure — a frozen panel of e-commerce buyer questions (Amazon FBA, Shopify, multi-channel, inventory, sales tax nexus) across four AI platforms, with your appearance rate against named competitors.
- Map — which pages the answers cite in this niche, ranked by frequency, plus your third-party footprint: app-partner directories, marketplace profiles, Clutch and G2 taxonomies, review recency.
- Move — correcting and completing those profiles, earning placement in the sources AI cites, and restructuring your pages into extractable claims: platforms supported, seller revenue range, services, price band.
