A founder just asked ChatGPT which accounting firm to use. We logged 29 of those answers.

Three firms take almost all of them. Specialized practices with 50–100 staff, podcasts and hundreds of venture-backed clients appear in 0–3%.

What the answers look like in this niche

Startup accounting is the most brand-concentrated accounting category we have measured. Ask for the best firm after a seed round, the best CPA for a YC company, or the alternatives to the market leader, and you get four or five names with descriptions, strengths, and frequently an explicit verdict — "best overall" for one firm, "I'd start with" another. A founder reading that has a shortlist and no reason to keep looking.

The questions where specialized firms do occasionally surface are the operational long tail: bookkeeping migrations, software switches, cleanup work. The purchase-stage phrasings — post-funding, investor-referral, competitor-alternative — went almost entirely to the same three names.

The most useful finding for a challenger firm

One firm in our run was described accurately by ChatGPT — services, ideal client, strengths — and still named in only 1 of 29 answers. The assistant knew exactly who they were and recommended competitors anyway. That is a ranking outcome, not an awareness problem, and ranking responds to source-layer work.

Two smaller firms entered answers on the strength of a single well-built page each — one of them a published VC-partner programme page. Neither outspent the leaders. They were simply legible to the systems doing the recommending.

Questions buyers in this niche ask us

Twenty-nine questions drawn from a frozen 100-question panel: category searches like "top startup CPA firms in the US", situation searches like "best accounting firm for a startup that just raised a seed round", head-to-head comparisons between named firms, and service queries covering R&D credits, 409A valuations and ASC 606. Each ran in a fresh, logged-out ChatGPT session with the exact phrasing a founder would type.
Not because it is 20 times better. Because the sources AI reads keep agreeing about it: editorial "best startup accounting firm" lists, review platforms, community threads, and comparison pages — several of which that firm publishes itself. In one answer the assistant openly noted that much of the comparison material online was authored by one of the firms being compared, flagged the bias, and used it anyway.
Usually, yes, because the cause is source coverage rather than brand knowledge. In our run, one firm was described accurately by ChatGPT — correct services, correct ideal client, fair strengths — and still named in only 1 of 29 answers. The model already held a correct representation of the firm. What was missing was corroboration in the sources it cites when forming a recommendation.
Rarely, and that is the point. 68% of US Google searches ended without any click in early 2026, and a majority of AI conversations end without a site visit at all. The value is inclusion in the shortlist that forms inside the answer — 6sense found buyers fill about four shortlist spots on day one and buy from that shortlist 95% of the time.
Measure the full panel across four assistants, map every source cited in the startup-accounting category, audit your third-party footprint (IRS credentialed-preparer directory, AICPA verification, Clutch and G2 taxonomies, review recency), then start with the two highest-leverage assets: comparison pages against the firms currently taking your answers, and corrections to the profiles AI already reads.
No. AI answers vary by session and change with their underlying sources. What we commit to is method: a frozen panel, monthly re-runs, honest reporting in both directions, and language kept measurable and non-guaranteed.
